Bucyrus man flees in sheriff's department cruiser; arrested on Wyandot rooftop
sg飞艇appBUCYRUS - A Bucyrus man was arrested Wednesday evening after stealing a Crawford County Sheriff's Department cruiser, leading to a statewide search that ended on the rooftop of a meat-packing plant in Wyandot.
sg飞艇appDehlen Hyden, 28, is being held at the Crawford County Justice Center on a charge of theft of a motor vehicle, according to a news release from the Crawford County Sheriff's Office. Additional charges could be issued when the case is reviewed by a grand jury.
sg飞艇appAt 5:25 p.m. Wednesday, Crawford County sheriff's deputies, accompanied by Bucyrus police, went to a home in the 700 block of South East Street to serve a protection order, according to reports by the police and sheriff's office.
Hyden was served the court paperwork and told he had to leave the residence, Crawford County Sheriff Scott Kent said Thursday.
"That's when he pulled out a knife and was going to harm himself, threatened to harm himself," Kent said. "He actually did inflict some harm to his arm with the knife before he was taken into custody. He was put in the backseat of the cruiser, and when officers were finishing up the call, he was able to bring his handcuffs from behind his back up to the front of him and go through the partition, and he drove off in the car."
Bucyrus police officers pursued the man, but ended up losing sight of him, Kent said. A bulletin was issued to all law enforcement in the state, advising them of the missing cruiser, and that the driver was possibly armed and dangerous.
sg飞艇appAt 7 p.m., a Wyandot County deputy sheriff spotted the cruiser behind an abandoned meat-packing facility in the village of Wyandot, which is in the southeast corner of Wynadot County at Little Sandusky Road and Ohio 294, south of Nevada. The Wyandot, Crawford and Marion sheriff's departments and the Ohio Highway Patrol responded to the area, Kent said.
"We set up around the factory and he was eventually located on the roof of the building and taken into custody without any further incident," Kent said. Hyden was arrested at 7:38 p.m.
Aside from the self-inflicted injury to Hyden's arm, no one was injured in the incident, Kent said. A camera system was torn out of the cruiser's interior, but it was otherwise undamaged.
